Lifesavers in the Black Country

Helping children manage money wisely

Keely - a local primary school teacher and debt adviser shares her experiences of using Lifesavers to teach local primary school children about managing their money.

Keely attended one of this years Lifesavers training sessions, run with the Just Finance Foundation and Young Money.

LifeSavers is a financial education programme for primary schools, giving children the knowledge, skills and attitudes to manage money well.

Habits around money are being formed by the age of 7!

Just 5% of parents think that their children leave school with the skills needed to manage money well.

LifeSavers helps, by equipping teachers to teach financial education. It also provides resources to engage parents and families.

We have run four sessions so far in the Black Country, in Sandwell, Dudley, Wolverhampton and Walsall.

Keely attended our Walsall session run with our Just Finance Black Country Worker, Rev Cassius Francis. He recently caught up with Keely, to see how she has been using these new resources since her training.

"I did two sessions for Y6 at Hillary Primary last Monday, which was 90 children in total, then years 5 and 6 at Abbey Primary, with another 60 children in total.

I was really pleased with the sessions and the feedback from the teachers present was good. The children were actively engaged and offering really interesting ideas about money. There were definitely a few things that surprised them so they now know they will have to pay those things as adults."

It is thanks to hard working teachers like Keely, that we will see more financially resilient children through the Lifesavers programme.
