Family life can put extra pressures on a budget, especially when money is tight.

Children keep growing, birthdays and Christmas come round every year, and partners don’t always agree on an approach to managing money which can put a strain on relationships. We’ve got some simple tips to help families have fun, save together and find support when times are tough.

Tips for saving and spending together as a family

  1. Decide on a treat or activity for the whole family and find out how much it will cost. Use an empty jar and coins to save a small amount each week until you have enough. Enjoy your treat!

  2. Discuss the difference between needs and wants – things we can’t do without and treats that can wait.

  3. Look out for offers and vouchers for cheap days out.  And don’t forget free activities like the local park, museum or gallery.

  4. Get kids involved in making cards for birthdays and celebrations, and stock up on small gifts in the sales.

  5. Find out about free activities in your area where you can meet other people. Try you local library or community centre for more information.

  6. Meet Milo, a friendly dinosaur who helps 5-7 years olds learn more about money.

Help  with the essentials of family life

School uniform: This can be a major cost for families – especially as children keep growing!

  • Find out if your school sells second hand uniform and check out local charity shops.

  • Ask other parents with older children if they have uniforms they can pass on.

  • Check if your local council provides help with the cost of uniforms. School uniform - GOV.UK

Healthy start: This is a government scheme for families with children under 4 who are claiming benefits. You can get help with buying milk or fruit and free vitamins. Healthy Start - GOV.UK

Baby banks: Baby banks provide essential clothing and equipment to families with babies and young children. Many also provide further support through free advice and links to other services. UK baby banks - Little Village
